This application form is for young people who believe that they are eligible to apply for the Westmorland and Furness Council 16 to 19 Education travel bursary scheme. We ask that all applicants read the policy (opens a new window) prior to filling out this form. It is not intended for households where there is an additional rate tax payer. An additional rate tax payer is someone with a taxable income of over £125,140 in 2025-26.
Either the student or the parent/guardian should apply. We will only accept one application per young person.
For students who car share, the driver should apply to the scheme. Passengers will not be eligible for a bursary.
If you are unable to fill out the electronic form please contact the council and we will be able to assist you. Please contact 0300 373 3300 / transports.waf@cumbria.gov.uk for more details.
Timescales
Closing date for applications is midday on 1st October 2025. This is subject to change based on the volume of applications received.
We will aim to make a decision within 15 working days of receiving this application. For successful applications we aim to process payments from September onwards. Payments will be made via BACS to the account details provided in the application.
If you are not eligible we will email you to offer you an opportunity to appeal (if you consider you have specific circumstances that warrant a grant outside the main criteria) and signpost to other support that you may be eligible for.
Before you start
Throughout this application we will use the terminology 'school/college'. However, students from other learning establishments (for example apprenticeship training centres) are also eligible to apply.
You will need to tell us:
- Applicant contact details;
- Student school/college contact details;
- The student's method of transport to school/college;
- Evidence of the educational placement, for example a letter confirming the placement from the school/college;
- Your bank account details and documentary evidence of this (full bank statement dated within the last 3 months which includes your address and bank sort code, account number and account name). Please note that without this document we will not be able to process your payment. Those who use a banking app must take a screenshot of their online statement which includes their address.
Please take your time to ensure that you are answering the questions fully and correctly. It is a criminal offence to knowingly or recklessly make a false statement to obtain grant funding.
Failure to provide the evidence requested will result in a delay to your application being processed.
Other funding
This grant is available to students who have not received any other funding for their school/college transport costs. Please confirm below that the student is not in receipt of or going to be in receipt of any other funding.
